Suppose I wanna do dual in EEE+MSc phys in bpgc, and suppose I get a good score in bitsat(above EEE cut-off)... shud I chose the BE degree higher in the pref list or the MSc higher? Some students from bits told me I can choose the BE first, then at d end of the first year I can ask for an MSc degree also depending on cgpa... so how high a cgpa does a BE student need to get an MSc degree also?
    Thanks

    sir,
I'm getting a score of 264 in BITSAT 2009.I read your advise to Purvi in previous post and it helped me a lot.I had a coaching at bansals kota for 2 yrs but my jee result isn't as good(i'm getting 166) and my expected rank in AIEEE is 9000. I,m a fresher and i'm in a dillema weather i should drop one year and try once again to get in IITs or not.
After reading your post it occured to me that if i get addmision to any of dual degree programes at BITS probably bio(like you did and purvi n plans to) and with an effort for one year i cud shift to a reasonably better and respectable branch i could save one year and rescue myself from monotonocity of similar studies for one year.Sir, i wish to ask is it tougher than preparing for jee ??also i'm afraid that if somehow i couldn't perform well wat are the conseqenses?
apart from above options i also have chance to get in NITs(with my score mentioned above) which of all do you think would be good for me?

pleae help me out i'm really confused.
    thanx.
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Dylan : Ya you should....taking an engineering should be your first option..if you cant get a good engineering degree then go for dual...At the end of 1 year if you are still interested in taking an M.Sc. dual you can take it provided you perform well in your first year

@Kesha : No it isnt tough...but it will be mentally strenuous more than actual studies coz there are lot of diversions...friends departments computers hostels gals and so on...so you need to control yourself and work hard...you can anyway enjoy a lot ...balance of fun and studies is most important...on the other hand JEE is all work and no play

If you are really determined to work hard go for duals...as for NIT which NIT will you get into???

can i join as MSC and then take b tech and leave MSC
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
    @Anonymous : No you cant
  • Udit · 7 months ago
    Sir,
If I take an M.Sc. degree in chemistry can I still take a B.tech in say mechanical or civil engineering or am I confined to chemical engineering.
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@udit : That is the reason why I asked you guys to read the first post on dual degrees before reading this

Anyways you can take up any engineering degree whatever the M.Sc. degree you j oin...it is purely based on your performance in your first year and not your M.Sc. degree

The funny part being people have no idea about Chemical Engineering.....Everybody thinks Chemical Engineering is all chemistry + engineering...

But the fact being it is 70% Physics...lot of Mathematics and less related to Chemistry :)
  • Keshav · 7 months ago
thank you for your valued advice.
As the results aren't yet out i don't know which NITs are for me but in my last query by "which of all" i meant weather i shld drop,go for then available NITs or opt for dual at BITS.

    sir if one take duals.........
nd den score very well in his 1st yr.....
den cud he be transferred 2 4 yr coursse......
hv u evr hrd dat case........
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Keshav : Obviously duals at BITS...why spend an extra year at coaching centre when you can spend that for an extra degree

@Anonymous : Irrespective of which degree you are if you have a very good CGPA say 9.5/10 you can go for an engineering degree transfer
There are decent hunk of students from dual degree who took a direct transfer to engineering...

Both dual degree and normal engineering guys do the same courses in first year ...so it doesnt matter which branch you belong to for a transfer
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
Sir,if we go for duals then we will get both msc degree as well as b.e degree.
but my question is that do b.e students get more options then dual students in terms of placements, internship etc...
n also off campus students are also given a b.e degree but they ain't at d same level with on campus students...so having only a degree really matter????
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
sir suppose i take in msc n den is it posseble that i myt make it to 4 year simple b.E...if yes den to what all branches can i migrate an wid wat cgpa
    '''????
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
err sirr this is a weird question but wud help me a lott...

can u pls. temme wat all courses n subjects ned to be done in da first year ( to change ma branch ie get a high cgpa ) >????

    ps reply asap
  • Vishal · 7 months ago
Suppose I want mechanical in Bits after duals....u said about 200 students take duals....what should be my rank among them?
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
What's the use of duals, u waste a year. isn't it better to repeat, you are bound to perform better next year. In duals, u'll get a degree only in pilani. If u repeat, u'll get a degree maybe in IIT...so why go for duals?
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Anonymous 1 : Not exactly....the most important thing is the CGPA( your performance in BITS ) ...but the normal b.e guys have one sem placement...while M.Sc. guys have one week placements...on the other hand M.Sc. guys do one year intern ( more chance of getting placed during intern)

And off campus guys getting a B.E. what is that???

@Anonymous 2 : Ya it is...but you need to get a CGPA of 9.5+...around 10 students get a transfer to engineering from first year..so getting a trasnfer is very tuff

@AAbnoymous 3 : All guys do the same courses in first year....as for course list check the dual degree 1 post

@Vishal : for mech you should be in among the top 120

@Anonymous : Hahahahahaha funny...how many repeaters get into JEE????

Do you have any idea about the number of people who simply waste an extra year and still not qualify into a goo engineering college???

Do you know the main reason why repeaters fail inspite of having an upper hand on first attempt guys???

It is frustration and diversions which kills their enthusiasm to study and get a good rank

Repeating according to me is the worst phase of your life...

On the other take a dual ...get an extra degree... better opportunities and a degree from BITS

hi i just wanna reconfirm tht every guy with an msc degree get a dual degree???
also wht shd be the score(cgpa) in Ist yr to get a CS branch.
do the guys in BE also opt for msc degree(whts the significance)? i think BE is lot more better than msc.
  • rohit · 7 months ago
    i;ve 1 more ques.
if i opt for msc(obviously bcz of less score) n score a gud cgpa in Ist yr,thn the branch for dual degree(BE) will be decided by me or the bits comm. will decide it??

    philosopher asking
sir i am getting 255 what are my chances of getting a MSC_DUAL in physics or info. sys.
and what shud be my performance to ensure a BE in electronics, electrical or mech.....
    i am totally confused
    please answer soon.....:-(
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@arvind mehta : Ya you can if you make a CGPA around 9.7/10 which is very very very tough...only 2-3 guys out of 800 get a transfer to computer science...The other option should be taking a dual degree and go for CompSi dual :)..

@rohit : Ya every person gets a dual in engineering or B.Pharm(people with very less CGPA get B.Pharm)

A cgpa of 7.8+ is required which according to me requires decent hardwork

Ya some guys from B.E. opt for M.Sc dual to gain an upper hand for higher studies....A masters degree is always helpful for higher studies

And for the branch...you must give a preference order as you give now...and if you cross the minimum required CGPA for that degree you will get it

@Philosopher : Mostly no...you could M.Sc. Bio or B.Pharm...to get a electronic dual you need a cgpa of 7.5+ and for mech around 7+

And you cannot get dual with M.Sc. Information Systems under normal circumstances....you need a high cgpa...9+ mostly
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
if a person takes msc then wats d min cgpa 2 get cs in pilani camus in 2nd yr
  • arvind mehta · 7 months ago
sir if i make it as in comp sci. dual will i be still able to complete my BE in 4 years???

i dunt wanna spend 5 years for it... is it so ??

    :)
  • siddhartha · 7 months ago
by seeing 2008 cutoff, i had a chance of getting b.pharms at hyd.can i join it
  • Debjit · 7 months ago
    sir
at 295mks i can get mech in goa and phy dual in pilani according 2 last year cutoff
wudnt getin into pilani be a much better idea as cgpa of 7.5 is quite manageable an du get an xtra degree for the cost of 1 yr.
and yes i am only 16 yrs. old so a few years wasted wont matter much(not dat doin msc will be a waste).
    pls. comment
and if possible start an article related to counselling procedure and branches of engg.
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Anonymous : Around 7.8+ after the end of first year

@Arvind Junior: What???If you take a dual you will have to complete it in 5 years....only normal b.e. guys can do it in 4 years

@siddhartha : What are your other options...I wont advice join B.Pharm unless you have any other good options

@Debjit : Ya you can...but many people loose interest stop studying and end up with bad duals...so be prepared for slogging hard for one more year...else you will repent not joining Goa campus which according to me is a wiser and safer option

    sir,
i've read all your posts.and they were of great help.but i still have some doubts.kindly clear them.sir,i got a 276 in bitsat and my aieee score is 201.shall i go for the dual degree?i had dropped 1 year.and could not perform well in exams again.i wish to do an mba with a good engineering degree.could you please suggest which is the best possible option for me?i know im being long but i want to clear all my doubts.i am ready to work really hard in the first year.but will it be worth it??by tough competition do u mean ill hav to compete with those also who hv computer scince as their engineering degree.plz sir help.ive lost all my confidence.help
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
heylo, karan here, i have secured a modest 248 marks in bitsat 2009. looking at the cutoffs of 2008, i may just (god willing) get MSc Biological in either BPHC or BPGC....i am quite interested in pursuing it but recently i read a query on www.bits360.com by someone who had written that 'the placement scenario for MSc Biological is not as good as the other branches'....is this true??? if yes, should i stop thinking about pursuing MSc bio???
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@260 : If you want a good dual in engineering and are ready to work hard then go for it....what are the other options you have

@292 : Check the post on cutoffs

@276 : Ya you need to compete with all to get a good CGPA but getting 8 is neither that tough nor that easy...it is all about mental strength rather than actual hard work.....you have lot of diversions...so the one who keeps his mind focus will get a good dual
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@akran : First read the post on dual degrees...

Your placements depends on the engineering dual you get not your M.Sc. degree
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
Sir, got 276 in bitsat. should i go for duals in pilani or chemical in goa or hyderabad? in ur querry with ankit(19 th may) u agreed dat goa placements r nt dat gud. scord 227 in aieee n 190 in jee. totally hopeless n dejectd. pls help...
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@276 :Placements in Goa were not as good as the top NIT's...doesnt mean they are bad....infact the placements last year were very good...but due to recession the scenario has changed completely...when you pass out dont worry about recession and stuff...you will surely have good placements :)

Again depends on your interest if you want to take a dual work hard for one more year or take and engineering in Goa...purely depends on your interest and level of commitements
  • samikshan · 7 months ago
    sir,
im getting 263 in bitsat......and im scoring 226 in aieee.....thus im not getting a good stream in any of the 3 top NITs(i mean trichy,warrangal,surathkal).......

......in an earlier post i learned that i will be getting only MSc in Bio in pilani(pls rectify me if im wrong).....will it be better if i join this dual course rather than any other NIT?????

...also can you pls giv n idea about how tuff it is to get a cgpa of 8+ with Biology in the 1st year.......thank you.....
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@samikshan : What all degrees will you get at NIT's??? If you are prepared to work hard and get a good engineering degree your sacrifice of not joining an NIT will be justified...else dont go for it

Everyone does the same courses in first year...so it doesnt make a difference what course you join BITS with

    Respected Sir(Siddhant),
if i prefer to go for Dual degree program wid MSC MATHS and BE in Mechanical at Goa,how is the scope of research wid my choice??And if I m planning to do my higher studies(I will definetly going to)i.e PG abroad at USA do BITS prepare for that???Like in website of Pilani campus one of the Bitsian was actually selected in YALE university wid gud scholarship??

  • Rishabh · 7 months ago
Sir I got 285 in BITSAT 09. Maths was easy, I think physics did me in....
What are my prospects? I read your blog and I think it is duals... And will I get duals in Pilani?

Nonetheless here are some of my doubts.....

i hav hrd abt dual degrees @ bits, plz clear some of my doubts.

1)Is a BE degree damn assured as a dual?Even the thought of getting BPhram with low cgpa has bcom a nightmare. How many of them usally gets BPharm?Or how difficult is it to get a good BE(EEE,CS,Mech)?

2)If a guy goes for MSc in Goa is he assured a BE as there is no BPharm in Goa?

3)If an MSc guy gets a BE @ d end of 1st yr,is he treatd d same way as in BE(Hons) counterparts,i mean during placements will he be put aside saying that this guy was not capable enough to get BE in the 1st attempt,so he is not gud enough(discrimination)?Or is there any difference in the course structure of BE as dual and the normal BE?

4)A BE degree usually requires 4 yrs & MSc takes 2 yrs to complete. But in BITS the MSc+BE is finished in 5 yrs time.Doesn’t this mean more workload?

5)I hav been told that MSc Eco is gud coz its ezy to get gud cgpa @ d end of 1st yr.If 1st yr syll is comm. 2 all then why Msc Eco is preffrd?

6)the course structure of different programs r provided in the BITS site. only the course details of 2nd 3rd &4th yr r given(5th yr missing). If we do our MSc in 2nd yr& 3rd yr when is the time 2 do the BE course?

7)An MSc guy getting EEE or CS @ d end of 1st yr is in a better position than a BE(Chem,Civil) guy inspite of the former scoring less than the latter in bitsat. Is this a bit unfair?

And sir I read you too are a dualite.... It would really cool if you could write a post about your personal experience as a dual student. What have your trials and successes been? How hard or easy was it for you to get a BE after the first year..... What is the commitment required? ...stuff like that... I think info straight from the horses mouth is the best!

@rupali : No idea abt AIEEE....but you can get dual degree...check the post on difference between dual degree and transfer at BITS :)

:Darvind got 330 in BITS...your advices helped;)
but i was pretty damn unsatisfied...lyk they had three qs were none of the options matched..
i reported the fact as specified...will I get marx for it??oh yeah and could you make a post suggestin an order in which to fill the preferences:D..n i kno this gets repetitive for you btu considering the marx i have...shuld i opt for an NIT if i get a really gud rank in it...say within 1000..?n could you suggest wut i shuld go for at this mark, meybe u could make a preference list for evrybody...it helps:D..
    thanx so much...u rock\m/
PS:on the lighter note, lotta ppl r scarin me wid raggin related stories at pilani but when i checked da bits360 website, the seniors were pretty decent:D...any comments?;0

  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Rishabh : I love guys like you who do read the blog properly...do some research and post genuine doubts and most importantly in the form of points...so here are all your answer...a pleasure to answer to such queries :)

1)Only 3-4 guys with very very very less CGPA get B.Pharm dual...even if you study for 3-4 hours before the exam you can get into and engineering dual :)...but seeing some guys who are pathetic...hopeless and tooo lazy I watn every guy on my blog the possibility of getting a B.Pharm dual if you dont study...It is just a warning so that no one can blame me in future :)

2)Ya he is assured....worst case Chemical

3)Actually M.Sc. guys are preferred during placements and internship...For example the cutoff for MY PS2(internship/project work) @ QualComm is 7.5 for normal B.E.guys while for M.Sc.(hons) dual guys it is 6.7 ...

Some companies have a policy not to take guys during placements in campus who do not passout in 4 years...only few companies have such policies and it is not of much concern...When you go for off campus placements you can anyways join those companies

    4) The beauty of BITS system :) An M.Sc. in BITS takes 4 years....A B.E. in BITS takes 4 years....and you do almost all common courses in 1 and second year....so in third you do your M.Sc. courses and in 4 your B.E. courses....in 5 year you do your PS2(internship/project work) or thesis...As for hectic it is a bit hectic...but you dont do more than 7 structured courses any sem :)

5)No it is good coz you get a good CGPA in M.Sc. Eco courses i.e. 3 year...not first year....also you can go into the field of finance and economics if you go for M.Sc.(hons) Eco...And I say it again and again...all guys do the same courses in first year :)

6)You do common courses in 1 year...almost all common courses in 2 year along with 2-3 branch specific courses...third year you do your M.Sc. courses...in 4 year your B.E. courses...in 5 your PS2 or internship

7)No it isnt...The risk your taking hoping to get a CompSci or EEE dual should be rewarded...and the distinction between Civil/Chemical and etc is only for placements....for MS Civil/Chemical guys have more opportunities as the competition is less :)

And for MBA it doesnt matter at all which discipline you belong to

And for my story - it will be like a Bollywood movie :)

Will write it some time later when I am free

  • torque · 7 months ago
    lol...btw by a preference list...i meant a general outline....of the courses u can get..
its relative difficulty in terms of content.
which course usually gets better placement...
a general nfo is mroe dan enuff...no need to be specific:)else culd u post sum links fmr where we cudl get such info...:)
itz lyk individual lyks and dislyks vary...but i guess a general idea abt the different courses..n diff dualite combos..helps..:)

@torque: Dont think of any NIT with 330...just a waste of time...Welcome to the future BITSian :)

All thanks to >>Arvind<< and other BITSians, I have made up my mind to join BITS pilani(after going through this blog and bits360 completely) .Though this may sound stupid I am really desperate to know about the first year books and how to crack the exams in the first year. I would request you to give a vivid idea about:
    1) The books needed for my first year preparation(Please dont be reluctant to mention this because I am seriously aiming for a high cgpa and I am determined to start my preparations now)
2)The exam schedules...tho i have read that it is continuous evaluation..please tell me when the main exams will be for the first sem and out of how many marks will it be..are the teachers stingy..:D..
3)Do your room mates let you study incase you are seriously studying..
4)Please give us an idea about the academic calendar of a first yr student..[like jun so and so ..july...]...
awaiting your reply..thanks a lot in advance...:-)
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
    @Killer : Great....Welcome to the BITSian family

1)The books hmmmm...try them @ bits360.com...I am not in touch with first yearites...
2)In Pilani you have exams almost everyday...it is tough...but on the other hand you dont have compulsory attendance :)...so plan properly the schedule you can get it only after going to the campus...it changes every year
3)Depends on your room mate...My room mate was a great guy...we both got M.Sc.(hons) transfer from Bio...he took Physics
4)It starts in August...and the weekly exams start from second week...there is continous evaluation...there is a cul fest in october for which you get around 10 days of Holiday...before the cul fest you have test series 1 for 20% and test series 2 for 20%...the final will be from dec 1 to dec 15 for 40%...the continuous evaluation in the form of surprise quizes...tutorials...labs and other stuff which accounts for 20%

" i seriously want to take research + teaching as a profession so is this path correct:-

take M.Sc.(hons) Physics in Pilani .... then opt for ECE dual ....

PLZ guide me coz i have no one else than you to help me ... really !
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Pay package : Why are you so worried about my pay package...Even i am not so considerate of my future :)

    @rupali : 1) Dual obviously
    2) Decent effort required...should control yourself from lots of distractions :)
3)Ya do check the post on difference between dual degree and transfer

@Bhavesh : Thanks finally someone does appreciate my comic sense :)

Anyways why do you want to drop an extra year???Instead take a dual and get a good degree and do justice to the extra year :)

    M.Sc. + B.E : Research in so many diverse fields ...

There is no ECE in Pilani campus but it doesnt matter as you can do all Communication related courses as electives by taking a EEE dual...

And 306 is not a bad score...put decent efforts in your first year and get a good dual in engineering

    hello sir this is sumit........
thanks to your guidance and bits360 (i have been reading your blog since april)
    i may get branch of my choice at manit bhopal (m.p.) through the aieee exam....( through the state quota){marks in aieee 200 ;eml in iit jee 2009;}

i have secured 286 in bitsat 2009 is still dual at bits a better option ?
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
sir arnd wat cgpa z req 2 get transfer frm duals to BE chemical......
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
1 ) wats d scope of BE manufacturin.........
is dere any scope in it
2 ) wich one z better msc tech or msc hons...
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
    @sumit : join BITS...

    @transfer to Chemical : Around 9.2

    @Anonymous : 1) No idea
    2) M.Sc.(hons) if you are willing to spend an extra year and get a good engineering dual....M.Sc.(tech( if you want to pass out in 4 years and dont care about Engineering degree :)
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
Arvind, can you throw some light on actual career options and company names for MSc. Bio Sciences? What is really this branch all about? What kind of subjects are taught in this.

    Mukul.
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
    sumit:
    thank you sir!!!!!!!!!
    planning to join bits!!!!!!!!!!!!
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Mukul : It is masters in Biology...equivalent to degree you get after you complete your B.Sc.(degree) + M.Sc. ....your placement and your future depends mostly on your engineering degree...

Your can do your higher studies related to one of the fields or a combination of the fields

    @Sumit : :)

sir is BE information systems available at pilani campus.....or it is available only in duals....
my frn said dat he is doin BE IS in pilani campus....but on d site it is given dat it is in duals only....
if it is in BE den arnd wat is d cut off last year.

    Hi, Madhumitha here
I got a 288. I want to take up a dual in chemistry and computer sci. Does the instituion definitely give out 35-40 seats in all branches of engg according to my cgpa or is it availability based??
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Anonymous: There is no B.E. IS in Pilani....we have M.Sc.(tech) Information Systems which is equivalent to the B.Tech Information Systems in any other college except that you get a masters degree after 4 years and is not an engineering degree

You dont get duals with M.Sc.(tech) degrees....Only with M.Sc.(hons) degree you get duals in Engineering

@Madhumita : They give 35-40 seats in every branch.....Civil and Chemical have lesser number of dual seats as people are already accommodated into CompSci/EEE/EIE/Mech
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
    sir, BHAVESH again...

some of my father's officemates were sayin that with 307 on the cards, it is impossible to get 'pilani', due to some reasons i may not be able to go GOA/HYD. 'if not pilani, then not BITS'- dats what my parents say.
They have no problem if i go for dual, but only physiX ...... they r so specific!

what can i do now !
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
    Sankeerth, Sir
My score in BITSAT is 270.Can i get selected? can i do dual degree? actually interested in B.Tech ece or civil.
Give gud suggestion for my best carrier .
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Bhavesh : Your dads officemates are fools...They may be elder to me but in the knowledge about engineering they are worse than you
Such people have fixed notions and only think in one direction...What is more important is your career and their advice does not help the cause...

I may sound rude but I hate such people who try to rub their idiotic thoughts on others children

Anyways with 307 you will surely get Pilani...Physics also

If you want to hear success stories of BITSians with Eco/Chem/Maths/Bio other than Physics search on www.bits360.com/forum<br />
Tell your dad to read my blog and it is your future so stand up

And for Goa...it is a very very good college....visit www.bits360.com/forum for more info

@Sanketh : Go for dual...you mostly wont get any engineering degree
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago

which dual course can i get with 270??
n which one should i opt so that i can take civil, ece r mech in the 2nd year????
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@sanketh : Eco followed by one of the three Maths/Physics/Chemistry based on your interest and then Bio...

I am prepd to work hard
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
    @Nithin : Thanks :)

Go for Goa...it is a good college....Till Mech it is good to avoid a dual degree as the final degree you get is same though different campuses

You keep saying it is better to take a dual at BITS than any branch at an average NIT like jaipur or bhopal. Why so? You waste one whole year. Isn't it better to grab what you want at NIT? Is wasting one year worth BITS with a 'worthless' Msc degree needed? (i'm saying worthless becuz it does not help at all in engineering. I came to this conclusion after asking MANY MANY people....my tution teachers, father, his colleagues, even a BITSian.)

No, I repeat, no person, who isn't it BITS advised me to take it over comp sc. in MA-NIT. In fact, they said BITS Goa was bad too, but I can't say about that.

Please give some valid reasons on why to spend one year extra, when in the end you get paid almost equal to a b.tech grad when u finish ur degree. I know Msc helps in research, but I don't wanna do research. In fact, most don't. They join as engineers or do MBA.

Will MSc help in M. Tech in India?
  • Vishal · 7 months ago
I was advised not to go to goa, not only becuz the environment is very diverting (It's in goa, land of booze and drugs etc.), but also becuz i was told companies look at the environment in which u studied, and they won't have pleasant views abt goa.
Which is better goa or hyderabad. I know right now hyderabad is not completely developed, but by the time we graduate, it might get better than goa. What do u think?

Also, I get this feeling that due to goa's location, it might turn into something like Manipal.
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@ankit : There is bad notion about the M.Sc degrees we get that they are worthless and only B.E. is best...but our system is the core for interdisciplinary research and higher studies which actually is more advantageous than doing general engineering

Even our ex president Abdul Kalam when he visited our campus was very much impressed with this system and said that the future is in inter disciplinary research work itself

As for NIT vs BITS as I always say you just even think of comparing the two colleges...they are light years apart....

Also for the extra year you spend doin an intern and it really helps in getting better jobs for sure

An M.Sc. degree will surely help for MS/M.tech simply because you have many many many more fields do a masters in engineering

Simple example : Say you join M.Sc. ( Bio) and take CompSci dual -just google search the number of fields you can do research/higher studies i.e. M.Tech or MS

@Vishal : Bad environment and diverting ...control your tongue bro...Booze and drugs are more rampant in IIT's and NIT's and BITS authorities are very strict with ragging and boozing/drugs

Companies dont care where you study....they just see whether you have had quality education adn if you can sustain the company pressure...and BITSians are very good at handling pressure

Goa was established in 2004...why do you think now it will turn into a Manipal???

Your bad notions about Goa will surely help some other guy take your place

    So make a wise choice

And do show your parents the blog www.bits360.com/forum
  • Ankit · 7 months ago
When you do an extra Msc degree, and u write that in ur resume, compainies will definitely notice that, and when you explain about it, it will create the impression that this guy could not get comp. sc. in the first place, so he took this route. So, you see, a bad impression is created.

My dad told me of a guy some of his colleagues were interviewing. He had got decent marks in everything. But he had completed engineering in 5 years. On questioning, he said he lost one year du to jaundice. The interviewers didn't believe him much, and became sceptical about him. So, you see, a dual may harm your prospects, becuase it's not the original 4 year course. Plus you waste a year.

Don't you think a four year course in NIT would be better?

Please give me reasons why NOT to join an average NIT in your home state (like Nagpur).
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@Ankit : When you have such prefixed notion no one can change your mind...just join an NIT and save my time

Companies infact prefer dualites over normal engineering guys in many cases...Some companies though have a rule that they dont select guys through placements who pass out in more than 4 years....But even in such companies you can have offcampus/walkin placements...anyways my advice will never convince idiots like you...

Do you think that the thousand of BITSians who passed out of BITS with dual degrees are fools????

@Others : You make that extra year count by doing 1 year internships in companies(like I do - 1 year intern @ QualComm) ...also the dual degree helps a lot in higher studies...

One must not care about the placements.... Your initial placement doesn't matter at all...what matters is your higher studies...the opportunities you get...how you develop as an individual

And BITS is way better than NIT's in such things
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago

    i got 1 doubt
u had xplaned the whole system of calculation of cgpa
    id lik 2 ask
case1:i have taken msc. eco. in pilani
case2:i have taken mech at goa
with whom i have 2 compete
    2 make my q clear
do cs guys compete with only cs guys or with all 800 guys
similarly do dual guys compte vid only dual guys
  • Anonymous · 7 months ago
i asked thst coz at 294 i am almost certain of gettin mech at goa and msc eco dual at pilani
i wanna join bts ahead of any nit
but i am confused as to vich degree shud i opt for
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 7 months ago
@294 : You compete with all the guys in the campus... Go for Mech Goa...safer and a better option :)
  • Ayan · 7 months ago
    Thanks bhaiya...
I'm interested in taking admission in pilani campus itself... got 281... last year's cut off for dual course in bio sc n eco were 274 n 285 resp... now since the opening of new iits, im expecting the cut off to fall this yr... at max be the same but not rise... so tht shuld make at least bio sc at pilani a certainty... i'd like u to comment on my calculation...
also my query is whether i can switch my MSc course aftr 1st yr... i dont wanna take bio but am really interested in takin eco as second degree as it'd be gr8 to have a subject of tht nature along wit a sc degree... also im interested in doing MS latr n so will i be preparin throughout 4 it in all the 4 yrs... hope the multiple courses of dual wont be a hurdle in tht... i ve read in ur earlier post tht one can but just need an assurance... sorry but im a bit anxious about this if u culd understand...

    sir,
i got 238 in BITSAT 2009 . will it be possible for me to get a dual degree in BITS HYDERABAD ? i'm totally confused . please give me some information about what course
    ( physics or bio ...etc.)
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
@Ayan : You shld get Bio in Pilani..Border case for Eco...Ya you can..please check the post on difference between duals and transfers....you dont prepare for MS...you perform well in your academics first and then take up GRE coaching in your 3 or 4 year or even 5(if you take up a dual)...the most important thing for a good university in US is your performance in college...your GRE score plays a minor role once you cross a cutoff
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
@lakshman : Mostly no....if lucky Bio in Hyd
  • Anonymous · 6 months ago
hi my bitsat score is 292
can you tell me why dual degree cut offs are so low .are placements for btech better than duals
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
@292 : Because 90% of the people join a dual degree only to get a better engineering degree...so when you get an engineering of your choice in the first place it is not advisable to go for a dual degree

No placements for both depend mainly on three things
    1) Your Branch
    2) Your CGPA
    3) Your extra curricular activities
  • Anonymous · 6 months ago
Hello, This is Dath,my son is getting 245 in Bitsat 09,Is there any chance of getting in to MSC Bio in Hyd or Goa
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
@Dath : Sir according to last year cutoffs it will be tough for your son to clear the Bio cutoff...if the cutoffs fall then your son has a chance in Hyd campus...Anyways there is no harm in applying
  • !_!D!T · 6 months ago
udit malik: sir i wanted to knw approx cut off fr bitsat dual acc to board marks... my pcme is 91.2%.... n with my bitsat score can i get a dual degree??? plz reply asap
  • Ayan · 6 months ago
thanks.. gone thru ur blog again n its clear now... i'm joining whichevr hons branch i get at pilani.. in extreme case if i dont get any shuld i go for goa or hyd?? i ve gone thru the websites of both... infrastruture at goa is awesome but culdnt find much about faculty there... howevr i ve gone thru the faculty list of hyd n it was impressive... how's the faculty of goa n how does it compare wit pilani n hyd campus??
    Ayan
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
    @udit : Dint get you

@Ayan : The thing is that the part of faculty of new campuses is from Pilani and there is constant echange of faculty to improve standars in all the colleges...
Goa faculty is very good and more important is the BITS degree...and going for an established college is more desired than a very new campus...so give preference to Goa and not for Hyd and just dont go by the faculty
  • Anonymous · 6 months ago
i am getting 306 ....should i opt fr electrical at goa....or any gud dual at pilani?????what r the duals i can get and which one would be best???is there any scope of dropping out frm dual and go fr the simple B.E. degree after a year???
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
    @306 : Electrical @ goa

You will get all duals in all the campuses but why take the trouble....join Goa campus...you will get a decent degree

And no you cannot drop out of dual degree once you join in BITS and go for simple B.E.....for doing that you need a very very good CGPA...close to 9.5 out of 10

    hi its deepa..
i scored 248 in bitsat 2009..and im interested in doing chemical engineering..
im frm wb..n hav a state rank of 906 n so can most probably get chemical eng. in NIT durgapur..
do i stand a chance 2 get in2 this dual degree in any bits campus?
i didnt hav bio in 12 so even in d worst case scenario cudnt possibly study b.pharm, could i? then i should be able 2 do b.e. in chemical?
    thank u..

  • D · 6 months ago
oh n i 4gt 2 mention that initially i had wanted 2 do engineering n thn MBA..so does MSc n thn again MBA make sense?? Plus 4 MBA doesnt an NIT tag help? Im saying so cuz i've heard ppl say it..
anyway waiting 4 a reply...btw this blog is really good..i hope i had come across it earlier..
  • Rishabh · 6 months ago
    This is Rishabh

    Sir gr8 posts so far.

OK. My bro works in TCS and I was just going thru the company profile and found out that TCS's CEO S Ramdorai is an MSc. + BE

This brings me to my next doubt.
Its stated on bits360 that the normal BE guys get a very light last sem as they complete their electives before the 4th yr. What about a dualite?

As in if I as a dualite complete my electives before my 5th yr PS2 ans stay on campus for a thesis.... do I get the free time to prepare for job interview and GRE/CAT etc.?

How practical is this hypothesis, is it very diff to complete those electives?

And you also commented on the course load of a dual degree but I could not get you at that time could please brief me about the course load again? I know in relative terms a dual is more hectic than a normal BE. But in general how demanding is the dual course. Please try to mention some details regarding working hrs per day for some diff sems.

Take your time to reply..after all I am the one who is totally free! :)
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
@deepa : Border case...very tough to answer unless one knows the trend of this year BITSAT...the safe option would be to apply for BITS and attend NIT counselling..Nope for an MBA your degrees dont matter...your college and your work experience does matter...

    NIT tag might help

@Anonymous : Around 6...very eassy to get that CGPA :)

@Rishabh : the funny part of TCS CEO is he wants to come for placements from BITS but our college placement incharge had some confrontation with him and is not allowing TCS for placements :)...I am not sure if it is the truth or just a rumour

Dualites dont have a light sem till 4 year
Dualites generally do 2 PS2(2 sems internship) in 5 year...but some sensible guys who prepare for CAT or GRE or GMAT stay one sem on and do a thesis...

For doing a thesis you dont have any classes or any exam but pure research and this means you have a lot of free time

You can also attend complete sem placements during this one semester unlike normal dualites who have only one week placement

There is nothing like working hours per day...you just need to be focused on your academics...that will help you to get a good CGPA..

As for the dual degree being hectic it is sometimes but it more mental than physical :)

    sir
can you please tell me the subject combinations that would supplement each other while opting for duals
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
@Anonymous: The fact is every science degree gels properly with any engineering degree though some combination's are more preferred

Economics goes well with all engineering degrees
    Physics with EEE/EIE/Mech
    Maths with CompSci
Chemistry and Bio with all degrees

    sir ,
    1. to change from B Pharma to msc dual , what is the lowest cgpa needed and what we get in it, like eee/phy or cse/maths or civil/phy?

    2. plz tell to change from B pharma in hyderabad to the above 3 after first year what approx. cgpa will be needed..

    3. also sir, if we are in msc (bio)[for which I am a border case] then to change in the above three what cgpa would be needed..

and thanks for providing such wonderful informations
  • ARVIND THATIKONDA · 6 months ago
    @Vaibhav :
    1) See the point is you cannot get a transfer to an M.Sc.(hons) and then take an engineering dual - no such cases are possible....i.e. if you take a transfer after first year to M.Sc. you will not get a dual in engineering but do only an M.Sc.(hons) course for 4 years
    2) To change to an engineering degree you need a CGPA above 9.2 for BITS
3)If you get an M.Sc. Bio for transfer and dual stuff read post on difference between duals and transfers...adn other posts on dual degrees

Sir , my doubts are whether a person admitted to BITS
[i] to any BE / engineering courses can end up with a Master's degree after 4/5/6 years ?
[ii] to MSc [hons] can end up with only a Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a Masters is also possible under the duals method ?

As I'm planning to do research in future [ my specialization will be under mechanical engg ] , I want to know whether it is better to end up with a Master's in Engineering or go by the dual method to end up with a Masters in say in Physics and a bachelor's in Mech Engg ?
  • Professor Chaos · 1 week ago
    Hi Jithin,

Yes you can get a Masters degree after joining college with an Engineering(B.E.) degree provided you perform well in the first year. One of my senior passed out with B.E. Computer Science + M.Sc. Mathematics

You can also do another Masters degree - it is not restricted to an engineering degree. One of my batchmates is doing M.Sc. Physics with M.Sc. Mathematics - Hope this clears your doubt

According to me both options are equally good. It entirely depends on you how you make use of the opportunities
